JOYFUL MOMENT FOR ALL OF US AT ROSLIN FAMILY

Gerson and Vonny

It was a great evening when these two person came to us and broke the news that they have done their best on their studies and succeeded . Praise The Lord .

Gerson was telling us that he will be sword as a doctor on October 14th 20016 while Vonny will be having her graduation on October 19th 2016.  The great news were certainly making us so happy and surely up lifting the morals of those who wants to do well in school. Peggy and I were so boosted too upon doing more and better for the brighter future of the CHILDREN . Praise The Lord for All being made good.

Gerson parents were passed away when he was 4 years old . He came to us when he was just finished the primary school. His older brother told us that he and the rest of his family were unable to support Gerson’s further study and it was said to be so difficult to even just having the daily needs to be satisfied . For that reason Gerson join the Roslin orphanage.

It was through the thick and thin and the togetherness we made it to this glorious day.

We are so thankful for The Lord”s blessings and Peggy’s efforts since the year 2000 on managing Roslin 24 hours a day without any substitute ( while I am flying and while our three children were in school)

Peggy was with Vonny during her graduation ceremony. She did well as she is in the top ten . We are so happy that a much brighter future will be with her as she has something to cling on. If 8 years ago she was unable to dream big things , she is now able to do so , Praise The Lord indeed. We are so blessed as the efforts are boosted with the good result and much better future for Vonny are enhanced.

A VISIT BY THE LUCAS FAMILY

The Lucas family

image1-1

It was so great to have The Lucas family at Roslin from June 18th to June 25th 2016. All the way from Salem , Oregon , USA , The lucas family came to Roslin.  On this trip , Mr Dennis Mathew Lucas came to Roslin accompanied by Mrs Tammy Marie Lucas , daughter Abigail Corrie Lucas , Elisabeth Grace Lucas and Olivia Eve Lucas .  What a solid first class team indeed.

It was such a wonderful visit as they were adding up the needed man power to do so many things of at the orphanage and other Roslin’s venues, including the hardy routines of the day to day things at Roslin , some  land clearing, paving the path at the orphanage and removing rocks.

Thank you very much to The Lucas family , with your participations the rocky soil at Roslin’s home stay has been made into a fantastic plating area and the colour has been changed with so much greenery.

OUR QUALITY TIME REMEMBERED LAST NIGHT

It was a great gathering indeed last night at our place in Singapore. Last year 16 of Singaporean university students were making a trip to our orphanage and doing their school projects both inside the orphanage and out side. At the orphanage we did some eductional matters with both the orphans and the school children of the villagers. Out side the orphanage we did some sosial activities such as making a cement floor for tyhe villagers , trying to do some land clearing at our future farm ( to show them how hard to clear up a farm land with sharp thorny trees in it ) , a tour to a spring water and a water fall ( ecotourims trips) . It was a great experience for every one and a time that I personally can treasure it for life. The fellowship that we were having was great and the bonding is solid until this time. Terence and Pauline came with their home made cake , while Mr Chiam the chef came all the way from Melbourne. Mr Alex Chee came with his angel spirit which making the gathering so alive and happier. The children were swimming and having the freshly BBQ’ed food in between their breaks.
We wish that we can do it again some time soon. We were having a simple BBQ night by the swimming pool last night. No music or anything fancy but our conversation were really making us so happy.
I shared the happy moment with my wife and she was envious when I told her what has been happening last night. Peggy is in Timor doing all the hard work for us , managing the orphanage as usual. ,We made a big change with our plan on how to build the rooms extention for the orphanage children. We are palnning to build a 24×6 Meters room each for the boys and the girl beside the class room . The class room will be made smaller on its width , instead of 10×10 , we will be building it as a 6×10 meters.
I will be going to the orphange after arriving from my LA flight which is on April 8th. I will be there till the 30th. Any of you who are willing to come please let me know. At the moment I will be having our condominium’s manager Edward Lim with us for 1 week in Timor during my stay . Some more friends are still needing their confirmation for their leave and to be able to come with me next month.
The little orphans are progressing well with their English language training and thier schooling matters. Time and care are what we have for them and it is up to them to excell well or not in school or any educational matters. with our constant guidance and care we are sure that we can do it.

HEALTH IS OUR PRIME CONCERN

Indeed health is our prime concern , especially during every rainy season where flu is prone to spread out at this region. Everyday after breakfast and a glass of milk my father in law is doing his routine task of giving the orphans vitamin. We are hoping that a complete diet with this extra vitamin daily will be able to guarantee a good growth for our orphans. Anyway this particular vitamin being given was a gift from aunty Jeanne Pattikawa from Los Angeles. She gave it to me when I was there during my night stop. Thank you the aunty Jeanne ( your gift is really reaching them and helping them to grow healthy). Some other vitamins are given too like vitamin C etc.
The orphanage is blessed with a good harvest of corn now. The corn are so sweet as if we barbeque them right after being harvested from it’s tree. I wish I have the picture to show you All (I was just being told by my father in law). I wish that I can be there and helping them to harvest the corn. Even though I am currently in New York I can imagine seeing the little ones eating our own corn freshly. I am glad that we plant them timely and the blessing of being given enough rain is enabling us to have a good harvest. Praise The Lord .

OUR LIBRARY

Our library building has been built 2 months ago. There are rooms being made for it ( room A and room B). We are hoping that we will be able to fill up the library with reasonably complete books for every one but especially for the primary schools students up to the high school students. Some books has been bought from a publisher in Jogjakarta City . We are planning to open this library on April at the latest ( during my annual leave and when I am there for 3 weeks). Some friends will be coming with me to the orphanage. Most of the books will be ion Indonesian language but we wil also provide some simple books with lots of pictures in english as well. we want to help the children with their English , at least we help them with vocabulary building program. It was sad for knowing that the abiliy of some English teacher are so badly existing . For instant one teacher was telling the students to write one , two , three as wan , tu and tri. They may pronouced it correctly but the way they wrote it was wrong all together. That is why from now on we are starting to teach the little orphans a little earlier. For teaching English we are having a special teacher with some 40 years of experience that is my father in law Cornelis. Great progresses has been made and I am sure that we can be closer to our targets every day. Another experienced volunteer came to the orphanage was Mr Leo Nesnoni . He is going to help us on activities which will enhance the children’s education . It is a privilege to have two seniors helping and sharing their experiences to us.

WE ARE SO HAPPY TO SEE THE CHILDREN GROWING WELL AND HEALTHY

02feb02-07

No one will think that this healthy baby ( Sonny ) was from a family where daily meal has been an uncertain thing and the house that his family live in is doorless and windowless. HIs older brother died during the famine ( July last year). Sonny joined the orphanage when he was 40 days old , almost no clothing and so tiny. But now we are seeing him as a healthy and happy child ( Praise The Lord). Those children who came to us as babies too are now happilly in school and doing well. It is great if we can make their schooling into some thing that is fun to do and eye opening for them to see and to learn more from the school daily. Almost every day they are telling different things to us. In the past they were only telling that they are learning ABC only daily, even though they were actaully learning A to Z. We are telling them that reading and writing is the key to success and to be a knowlegeable person. After sending them to school for since August, we are asking them to start walking to school and going back from the school. We love them but we want to let them know some survival matters as early as possible. The school is about 2 km from the orphanage’s location. The first time they went to school on foot they told us that they were seeing so many things a long the street like butterflies, catepillars, lady bugs, grasshopper, different kind of trees etc. They are enjoying and forgeting that the school is actually quite a distance away for primary 1 students.

schooling01

One day when they were walking home, Christopher was so exited when they were about to walk across of a pool of muddy water. All were able to circumnavigate it but chris was slipped down and seating on the pool of muddy water. It was funny and great seeing all other kids were telling Chris to be more careful when walking on that part of the street and to focus on the surfaces when they are walking. It is a good team effort among them without us being involve in it.

OUR FUTURE FARM

During our recent trip we did our best to start making the fence of our future farm. It is situated some 40 km from the orphanage location and it was full with thorny trees. Some 40 KM from Fatuleu mountain. After the clearing we started with making some “live” fence . We are planting “Gamal” trees by sticking the trees to the soil around the farm. If things grow well, we are not only having a good fence but the leaves can be used to feed the cows too during the dry season. We were using 2 pickup cars and we were doing it day and night regardless the weather condition. It can be soaking wet too some times. We were quite frequently having our meals on the farm ( take away food ) and if we were running out of time , we were barbequeing fresh corn for our dinner. With our togetherness, barbequed corns were able to give us joy and energy to continue working in a good mood and staying in a happy environment. I am hoping that in 10 years time ( when I am retired), the farm will be able to finance the orphanage from its production. It can be done if we are putting our best effort for it. We will be planting some teak wood for the outer part, some bananas and cashew nuts for most of the farm area. Teak wood can be harvested in 15 to 20 years but cashew nut it can starts generating some harvest in 5 years time. Banana can be a daily production if we are able to manage it properly ( about 1 year after we start planting the bananas).Basically we want to change the unproductive thorny bush into a productive farm.

EDUCATION IS THE ONLY KEY TO PROGRESS

wanttobeclevertoo

LEARNING CAN BE ANY WHERE

It is a joy for us to be able to pass some of our knowledge to others. Only through education that people can progress better and more competitive on facing this modern world.Roslin Orphanage will do it its best to do it. For two weeks 15 Singaporean students were sharing their expertise to teach the children some English , games and goal setting. It was a joy to see that the anthusiasm of the village children upon learnig to speak English , some common games , singing popular children songs in English like Old McDonald etc.The first day were 68 children attending and on the second day were 99 village children attending. We wish that we can ask more university students or voluteers to come and to participate on the efforts of bringing the education up for this area.
Nusa Tenggara Timur or N T T province has been the poorest province in Indonesia both in the things being able to be produced and the poorest in the education level. It is because of the minimum rain fall and not having enough schools for the villagers ( some of the schools are in a bad condition like not having a paved floor, holes on the walls, doorless , not enough seats and very bad desk). It is a big advantage to be a city school’s student where the facitity are in much much better condition. To be bare footed is may be ok but not when you have to walk for miles on the sharp stones surfaces on the way to school , back and forth daily.
